In advance of Frederic Church: A Painter’s Pilgrimage, Reynolda House is offering day trips to local spiritual and religious sites to explore how different traditions incorporate nature, art, and architecture. The exhibition, opening February 9, highlights Frederic Church’s own experiences in the Near East and Mediterranean. Earlier in his career, Church saw the divine in the sublimity of the natural world, and during his pilgrimage, he finds the same in the ruins of antiquity. The artist ultimately borrowed from the architectural traditions of the Near East to design his home, Olana, in New York state.
During these day-long journeys, we will explore commonalities, cultural exchange, and disparities in how the visual world is understood in relation to spirituality and divinity. Guests have the option to take part in one or both of two day-long trips. Each day, we will visit four distinct sites, and our experiences at each location will be facilitated by local clergy, scholars, and community experts.
