Join in the conversation as two local scholars discuss “pilgrimage” from different angles.
Dr. Laura Veneskey, assistant professor of Ancient, Medieval, and Byzantine Art in the Wake Forest Department of Art, will present an exploration of how pilgrims have historically taken the holy land home with them. Discussing pilgrim souvenirs and architectural reconstructions, Dr. Veneskey will show how artist Frederic Church was participating in a centuries-old tradition.
Dr. Lucas Johnston, associate professor of religion and environment, will follow with an analysis of the naturalists of the 18th and 19th centuries, who set about visiting a new "holy land" (newly protected natural areas). Dr. Johnston will consider the public portrayals of protected/consecrated areas, their political role in the 19th and 20th centuries, and their reinvention as a "democratic space" in the 20th and 21st centuries.
