Saints, Soap, and Second Thoughts: Palestine in the Era of Frederic Edwin Church with Charles Wilkins

By Reynolda House Museum of American Art (other events)

ABOUT ABOUT

Whether merchants, pilgrims, tourists, or painters, most Americans visiting Ottoman Palestine in the 19th century brought with them images and ideas about the land connected with the distant past, primarily Biblical Christianity and Classical Antiquity. Dr. Charles Wilkins, associate professor of history at Wake Forest University, will attempt to reconstruct what 19th-century Palestine was like for the indigenous Arab population, and will relate Church's artistic portrayals to recent scholarship in social, religious, and transnational history
