This course will investigate the complicated concept of the native in the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Herman Melville, Benjamin Franklin, and others. Native Americans carried ever-greater significance as the nation was defined in contrast to the Old World in the 18th century and in contrast to European and Asian immigrants in the 19th. We will examine art and literature for clues to the mythology of national origin. Instructor Eric Wilson is professor of English at Wake Forest University and author of several books, including My Business Is To Create: Blake’s Infinite Writing.
